Amazon’s AI Resurgence: AWS & Anthropic’s Multi-Gigawatt Trainium Expansion

AWS is staging a major resurgence in the AI cloud market through a deep partnership with Anthropic. To support Anthropic's model training, AWS is constructing multi-gigawatt datacenter capacity, the fastest build-out in its history. These new facilities will house the world's largest non-Nvidia AI chip cluster, featuring nearly a million of Amazon's custom Trainium2 accelerators. While Trainium2 may seem inferior to GPUs on some specifications, its strategic advantage lies in a better total cost of ownership (TCO) per unit of memory bandwidth and deep hardware-software codesign. This massive investment aims to counter AWS's perceived underperformance in the AI era and secure Anthropic as a key anchor customer.
