Do You Still Own the Code Your AI Wrote? I Built CodeOwnership to Measure It

A new tool called CodeOwnership was developed to measure a developer's true understanding of code generated by AI assistants. The system tests practical ownership by having an AI write a feature, secretly introducing a bug, and then requiring the developer to find and fix it without any AI help. In an initial test run, the author failed to locate the planted bug despite having high confidence in their understanding of the code. The tool deliberately separates metrics for perceived confidence, debugging ability, and post-task comprehension to highlight potential gaps between a developer's belief and their actual skill.
