Runway Dev's Model Router automatically selects the optimal generative model for a request based on user preferences for cost, quality, or latency. An experiment compared a state-of-the-art (SOTA) video model against various router configurations across 250 image-to-video prompts. The results demonstrated that a quality-optimized router with a $1.00 per-generation cap reduced costs by 66% while retaining 95% of the SOTA model's usable quality. This shows that dynamic routing can significantly lower expenses compared to the common practice of defaulting to the most expensive model for every task, without a major trade-off in production quality.
