HiRO-ACEv2: Simulating extreme weather at 3 km resolution for a fraction of the cost

HiRO-ACEv2 is an updated AI climate emulation system designed to simulate extreme weather at a high 3 km resolution. It consists of two models: ACE, which operates at a coarse 100 km resolution, and HiROv2, which downscales the output to provide fine detail on rain, wind, and pressure. The new version shows significant improvement in predicting the intensity and structure of rare events like tropical cyclones, matching the statistics of traditional high-resolution simulations to within 3%. This AI-based approach generates global climate data at approximately 1/300th the cost of conventional methods, offering a flexible and inexpensive tool for researchers. Future plans involve training the model for different climate scenarios and adding more output variables like temperature and snow.
