huggingface_hub v1.0: Five Years of Building the Foundation of Open Machine Learning

The `huggingface_hub` library has reached its v1.0 milestone, marking its maturity as a core Python package for accessing millions of models, datasets, and Spaces. Originally extracted from the `transformers` library as a simple Git wrapper, it evolved significantly over five years to better serve the open machine learning community. A pivotal shift was the move from Git-based interactions to direct HTTP requests for file uploads, simplifying workflows and making the library more accessible. This new version introduces major changes including a migration to `httpx`, a completely redesigned command-line interface, and full adoption of `hf_xet` for improved file transfers.
