I Stole a Wall Street Trick to Solve a Google Trends Data Problem

Comparing Google Trends data across different countries is challenging because the data is normalized specific to each region, making direct comparisons of search scores misleading. The problem is that a peak score of 100 in one country does not equal the same absolute search volume as a peak score of 100 in another. To solve this, a methodology is proposed that borrows the concept of a "basket" from financial indices like the S&P 500. By creating a representative basket of popular search terms for each country, a comparable index can be constructed to track and compare search volumes across geographies.
