The Polynomial That Fixed 30 Years of Cloth Simulation

A new cloth simulation solver improves upon previous methods by replacing a key mathematical component to achieve greater stability. The prior standard, Incremental Potential Contact (IPC), used a logarithmic energy barrier to prevent surfaces from passing through each other, but this caused numerical instability when objects got very close. The breakthrough involves swapping this logarithm for a cubic polynomial, whose curvature ramps up more gradually, avoiding the explosive stiffness that made the old system ill-conditioned. This results in a much more robust and reliable simulation that can handle complex, tight-contact scenarios without the solver failing, a long-standing problem in computer graphics.
