The System Always Knows: Why Local Efficiency and System Performance Are Not the Same Problem

Focusing too heavily on optimizing a single business metric, like cost efficiency, can paradoxically degrade the overall performance of the entire system. In last-mile delivery, for example, adding more stops to a route makes each delivery cheaper but simultaneously increases the risk of accumulated delays from minor issues at each stop. Consequently, while a cost dashboard may show improvement, the last customer on a route inherits all the minor delays, resulting in a late delivery and a poor experience. This "optimization trap" often occurs because different teams are measured on separate metrics, preventing anyone from seeing the full, system-wide impact of their decisions.
