Understanding the Generative AI User

To successfully build LLM-based tools, product designers must understand how end users perceive and understand AI. A four-persona framework categorizes users as Unconscious, Avoidant, AI Enthusiast, or Informed, based on their knowledge and sentiment towards the technology. These varied user profiles arise from the unique characteristics of generative AI, including its nondeterministic, inscrutable, and autonomous nature, which can disrupt user trust and expectations. Product designers should conduct rigorous user research to understand their audience, build products tailored to these user profiles, and prioritize educating users to set realistic expectations.
