What Makes AI-Written Stories Feel Off?

AI-generated fiction can often be distinguished from human writing by analyzing its underlying narrative structure rather than just surface-level stylistic patterns. A study called StoryScope investigated these differences by comparing thousands of human and AI-written stories based on the same prompts. The research found that AI-generated stories tend to have more linear plots, fewer subplots, and more explicitly stated themes. AI also more frequently relies on dramatic physical sensations to convey character emotions compared to human authors. A classifier trained on these narrative features proved highly effective at detecting AI-written content, even after it had been stylistically edited.
