Zed's Pricing Has Changed: LLM Usage Is Now Token-Based

The Zed code editor is changing its AI pricing from a prompt-based system to a token-based one to better align costs with actual usage. The Pro plan's price is decreasing from $20 to $10 per month, which will now include a starting amount of token credits rather than a fixed number of prompts. This update also adds access to more large language models, including GPT-5 and Gemini 2.5, in addition to the existing Anthropic models. The company states this change is driven by the high cost of LLM inference, which has become its largest expense. Zed also highlights alternative ways to use AI, such as bringing your own API keys or running local models.
